The health benefits of increasing cycling

The Department for Transport has overseen a large programme of research to evaluate the cycling towns programme. The results of the initial baseline survey have been made available to researchers interested in investigating factors associated with cycling in 12 urban areas of England. Nick Cavill worked with DfT social researchers to analyse the CCT Evaluation Baseline Survey, investigating the potential for delivering public health benefits through increasing cycling amongst different population groups. The paper explores the size and characteristics of those groups to inform the targeting of cycling interventions.

The results are relevant to local authorities who are making the case for investment in cycling, and considering how best to design schemes to realise the health benefits of cycling.
