The contribution of local policies to cardiovascular diseases and other NCDs

We worked with HM Partnerships and Liverpool First For Health and Wellbeing Partnership to investigate how local policies might be amended to improve public health across Liverpool.

Rather than rely on a single source of information, we brought together evidence from international literature and the opinions of local policy makers, to create achievable, evidence-based recommendations for policy action. The recommendations are therefore a realistic assessment of the policy changes that are likely to be both feasible and effective within the city.

During the course of the research, there were a number of national policy developments that influenced our findings: Manchester voted against the congestion charge; national debates focused on a minimum price for alcohol, whilst minimum pricing legislation was introduced in Scotland; and Waltham Forest in east London announced its plans to ban the setting up of fast food outlets 400 metres from schools, parks and youth centres. These developments are likely to have influenced the views of the stakeholders we interviewed, and provided an interesting ‘real world’ perspective to the published evidence of effectiveness.  The final report is available on the HM Partnerships website.
