Does the pedometer have to be shut to work

The pedometer will only register if the main body is upright - which means keeping it shut. But this can be useful if you don't want to measure steps but also don't want to lose your total to date, just flip the cover open. This can be useful if you are in a car on a very bumpy road - sometimes bumps can count as steps.

I hear something moving inside my DIGI-WALKER. Is that normal?

Yes. That's the suspended lever arm, which moves up and down as you move. You'll notice that the lever arm counts "steps" when you shake or move the pedometer. That, too, is normal - but it's not a very healthy way to get your steps in!

After a few days, you shouldn't notice the clicking noise. If you are among the small percentage of people who are annoyed by this noise, you may want to consider the NL-2000 activity monitor , which has a different mechanism for measuring steps. The NL-2000 is completely silent.

I don't think my pedometer is working properly. What should I do?

In most cases, problems with pedometers accurately recording steps can be remedied by adjusting how the pedometer is positioned on your body.

For DIGI-WALKER models, it's essential that the pedometer remain upright because of how the internal mechanism works. If your tummy is pushing the pedometer out of its upright position, you may be getting inaccurate results. Wearing the pedometer on your waistband over your hip bone may solve this problem.

How does the pedometer know how far I've gone?

The SW401 pedometer multiplies the number of steps you take by the stride length you enter and then divides that number by 5,280 (the number of feet in a mile). Therefore, if you want your distance measurement to be accurate, it is important to enter an accurate stride length.

Will my pedometer work properly if it's in my pocket?

No. If the pedometer has room to move around in your pocket, it's not likely to remain vertical, which means it will be unable to count your steps accurately.

For accurate readings, your pedometer must be in an upright, vertical position at all times.

Will my pedometer work if I run?

Yes. The NL-2000 activity monitor and all DIGI-WALKER models work for running. But with the DIGI-WALKER, you'll need to set a stride length that corresponds to your pace if you want your distance meter to be accurate.

When finished, you'll want to re-enter your walking stride length. Note: Only the SW-401 displays the distance walked or run.
